One of the newest buildings in Budapest lies on the Danube bank between Petőfi Bridge and Liberty Bridge on the Pest side. This shopping, cultural and entertainment centre opened exactly a year ago (2013), although the original opening date was set to summer of 2011 (legal issues delayed the opening).
The building encompasses the modern, glass structure and two reconstructed public warehouses that were originally used in the 19th century for wheat storage.
What will you find at the Whale? Some restaurants and cafes, a market place with antique shops and organic food shops, and the Budapest Gallery is located in this building. During the weekends there is also a craft and farmer’s market, where you can buy cheeses, Hungarian sausages, bakery goods and more.
See the reflection of a building from the Buda side in the windows? It is the Eötvös Loránd University of Arts and Sciences. I’ve actually graduated from this university, but it was at a different location back then.
Address: Budapest, 9th District, Fővám Square 11-12.
